Healthcare Worker Starts 2025 as a Millionaire
A fortunate EuroMillions player has recounted how a ‘funny feeling’ led him to purchase tickets for the New Year’s Eve draw, resulting in a life-changing win.Andy Hornsby, a 56-year-old healthcare worker, was typically an occasional EuroMillions participant. However, an unexpected impulse urged him to enter this specific draw, which offered 10 prizes of £1 million through the Millionaire Maker, as opposed to the usual one.
Ten minutes before midnight, a similar sensation prompted him to check his numbers while his household prepared for the new year. Discovering a match with one of the winning Millionaire Maker codes, he ushered in 2025 in the most remarkable way.
Hornsby recounted, “My partner thought she had missed midnight when she entered to hear us cheering. Instead of ‘Happy New Year’, I said, ‘I think we’re millionaires,’ to which she responded, ‘don’t be so stupid’!
“The evening became a blur; I don’t think we even wished others a Happy New Year, as we repeatedly checked the ticket. It felt surreal, and the laughter grew as the news sunk in. My partner’s main concern was that I’d spend it all in a store. I’ve had memorable New Year’s Eves, but nothing compares to this!”
No Plans to Retire
Reflecting on his decision to buy tickets, Hornsby shared, “Normally I wouldn’t spend £5, but I followed a gut instinct, bought two tickets, and placed them under our lucky shamrock stone at home. It’s safe to say that Lady Luck smiled on us, and our stone certainly proved lucky!”
Andy and his partner are looking forward to a wedding in May and a bright future. They plan to buy a new home, and Mandy has decided to leave her shift work to enjoy more free weekends. However, Andy doesn’t plan to retire.
“I enjoy my job; I’ve worked all my life, so I see no reason to stop now,” said Andy, a specialist medical delivery driver. “Free from Mandy’s shifts, we’ll have more freedom and time to enjoy our new home together.”
The couple has purchased a campervan to explore more locally and plan to take more cruises. One potential destination is a location abroad, where Andy surprised Mandy with an engagement ring at a famous landmark.
Jackpot at £83 Million
Andy was one of the final big winners in a successful 2024 for the National Lottery, alongside nine others who secured £1 million on December 31st. This year has yet to see a jackpot win, with the top prize climbing to £83 million.
